When Should I Make Reservations?
We often are asked ‘how early should I book my stay/tours’ and the answer is inevitably ‘early!’ Seward is a very popular destination, the fifth most visited in Alaska, and often tours and lodging fills up well in advance.
May through mid-June is considered early shoulder season and you’ll have more flexibility when choosing your tour options, but don’t take a chance on lodging. Book your stay well before arrival to be safe, but you’re probably okay waiting until closer to your stay to book your tours.
Late-June through mid-August are high season and it’s common for most lodging to sell out. Also, popular tours will sell out well in advance. Be especially careful the week of the 4th of July. Seward host’s the Mount Marathon Race and the 4th of July Celebration this week and everything will be sold out, sometimes as much as one year in advance.
Mid-August marks the beginning of fall for Seward and will begin to see fewer travelers. This is a good time of year to visit Seward as there is typically a fair amount of availability for most tours and accommodations. Bring your rain gear, this is rainy season.
If you’re planning on visiting from mid-September through mid-April you’ll find yourself in a locals winter wonderland. While many businesses have boarded up for the winter, you’ll still find opportunities for wildlife cruises, kayaking, festivals, events, skiing, great dining and cheap lodging.
